T|S Designs Stamp for Canada Post: Commemorating 150 Years of the Toronto Stock Exchange
Canada Post is helping to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Toronto Stock Exchange by issuing a special commemorative stamp in 2002. The stamp was designed by Taylor|Sprules Corporation, located in Toronto close to the historic Bay Street Stock Exchange building (now home to The Design Exchange). The stamp honours the Exchange and its essential place in the financial history of the country.
The design is a composition of visual icons depicting the past, present and future of the TSX. The background image is an architectural detail of the frieze seen on the front elevation of the fine art deco building, built on Bay Street in 1937 (photography by noted Toronto photographer Tracy Clare). Juxtaposing the historic imagery is a representation of an electronic ticker tape, the sign of today's fully electronic exchange. A hovering globe, superimposed with 'crosshairs', completes the design- the globe positions the TSX in a world market and the addition of the crosshairs locates Toronto in the global market.
The design of the stamp was led by Ivan Novotny, a graduate of the Ontario College of Art (1987) and a member of the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario (RGD). Novotny has established himself as an extremely talented, multi-disciplined designer, who has been working on international accounts with Taylor|Sprules Corporation for nearly 15 years. Novotny is the Vice President of Design. Working with a founding partner of the firm, John Taylor and Senior Designer, Patrick Sayers, the challenge was to be sensitive to the legacy of The Exchange while expressing the vibrant nature of its future.
Taylor|Sprules also designed a stamp published in the Millennium collection, celebrating Canadian achievement at the turn of the millennium. The stamp features Sir Charles Saunders, The Marquis of Wheat.
Taylor|Sprules Corporation is an internationally recognized firm with more than 25 years of experience in brand development and is an acknowledged leader in strategic marketing and linked brand communications.
